Backyard Baseball is a sports game simulating baseball, released by Humongous Entertainment in 1997. Back then, playing it on a PC was the pinnacle, with vibrant 2D graphics and super cute characters, embodying the “kids playing baseball in the backyard” vibe true to its name. In early 2025, Backyard Baseball ’97 was remade and rereleased by Playground Productions LLC, breathing new life into this legendary game.
Introduce about Backyard Baseball ’97
The legendary kid athletes
The heart of Backyard Baseball ’97 lies in its premise. This isn’t a grand MLB style baseball simulation, but backyard baseball, where kids with unique skills, personalities, and quirky outfits come together. There are over 30 characters to choose from, from the unbeatable Pablo Sanchez, speedster Pete Wheeler, to Angela Delvecchio with a curveball that even pros would respect.
Each character has distinct stats for running, throwing, hitting, catching, and, crucially, attitude. Some kids hit the field like Viking warriors, while others look like they were dragged there by their mom, perpetually grumpy.
Fields anywhere
Forget Yankee or Dodger Stadium, the fields in Backyard Baseball ’97 are someone’s lawn, a public park, or an empty lot next to a dump. There’s a field where if you hit too hard, the ball smacks a parked truck and bounces back to nail the catcher. Another has a dog. Yes, an actual dog that runs onto the field, snatches the ball, and bolts.
This isn’t a joke. In one match, I swung and missed, the ball veered sideways, and landed in a flowerbed, kicking up a cloud of dust. The sounds, animations, and character expressions made me genuinely recall my own childhood, just like the kids in the game.
Game modes
Backyard Baseball ’97 offers several modes: Single Game, Season Mode, and Batting Practice. Single Game is for those who want to jump in for a few casual innings. Season Mode lets you lead your kid team through a full season, complete with the emotional highs and lows of professional play. Batting Practice is exactly what it sounds like, a training ground to hone reflexes and perfect swing timing.
What’s special about Season Mode is that you’re not just controlling players but also acting as a coach: setting lineups, strategizing, and rotating pitchers based on stamina. Some days, it rains, the field gets slick, and swings go off target compared to normal.
Backyard Baseball ’97 retains original controls
One of the best things about the Backyard Baseball ’97 remake is its retention of the simple interface, requiring just a few inputs. However, instead of using a mouse to select pitches, swings, or running directions, you now interact directly by tapping the screen.
- When batting: No complex swing buttons, just time your swipe and aim it right as the ball arrives. Sounds simple, but in action? Swear, facing Lisa Crockett’s curveball or Angela Delvecchio’s fastball, you could swipe until dawn and still miss.
- When pitching: Choose pitch types (fastball, curve, slider) by dragging the ball to different corners of the pitching frame. It feels like drawing the ball’s path, very intuitive, but precise to the pixel. The challenge is balancing power and direction, miss by a hair, and the opponent smashes it into orbit.
- When base running: Tap a character to urge them to run or tap bases to signal advancing. Simple, clean, no misclicks. But the game doesn’t let you relax, as many situations demand split second judgment. There’s no time to pull up a tactical map like in strategy games. Everything unfolds in seconds, like real life.
- When defending: Tap to select the player nearest the ball and swipe to throw to the needed base. The brilliance is the smart teammate AI, you don’t need to micromanage the whole team, just handle the play you’re responsible for. Unless you’re the type who wants to catch every ball in a match, even ones flying toward someone’s backyard fence.
Team customization
From the start, you can pick your team name, design a simple logo, and choose jersey colors, gloves, hats, and shoes. Name your team “Unbeatable FC” or “website” if you want. This feature builds attachment to the team you create, blending the roles of gamer and team manager.
The more you play, the more you unlock small accessories for characters, like pilot hats, cool glasses, or neon gloves. These don’t boost stats but definitely boost morale. The game relies entirely on skill, but a bit of style can seriously up your confidence!
Graphics and sound
Playground Productions kept the original cartoon style. The hand drawn, lovable art with big eyed, big headed, short legged characters brims with expression. Unlike the slightly pixelated and choppy 1997 version, the 2025 edition boasts higher resolution, smooth textures, vibrant colors, and, most importantly, runs smoothly.
For sound, think glove catches, bat cracks, or the kids’s “wooo!” after a slick play, all meticulously redone. The background music features upbeat jazz funk cartoon tunes that help you chill without being jarring. The virtual commentator’s voice, redubbed, retains that local TV vibe, part funny, part endearing, like old American guys cheering at a community game.

The 2025 version of Backyard Baseball ’97 doesn’t try to be the most realistic baseball game or compete with modern games. It knows what it is, a slice of memory, refurbished just enough to thrive in the era of 4K, 120Hz, and RTX. This is a game you can play with your kids or even with the you from 20 years ago.
