Tokyo is dead. Not a fiery Hollywood demise, but a silent, creeping death cloaked in dust. Above ground, only desolation remains: skeletal buildings, empty stations, and subways now gateways to hell. METRO QUESTER opens like this, a whispered invitation, and you, for some reason, nod in agreement. So, you begin your descent…
Introduce about METRO QUESTER
METRO QUESTER is a dungeon-crawling RPG with hack-and-slash vibes, set in a post-apocalyptic future. Developed by Thousand Games and published by KEMCO, it features world-building by manga artist Kazushi Hagiwara (known for Bastard!!) and deep gameplay systems designed by Hironori Kato.
Gameplay
METRO QUESTER is a turn-based dungeon RPG with first-person perspective and auto-mapping, a feature you’ll cherish after getting lost on floor two. No random maps here, every level is hand-crafted with hidden areas, traps, and odd rooms testing your patience. The “Fog of War” mechanic limits visibility to the square ahead, blending suspense and strategy, as one wrong step can trigger a trap or ambush.
At rest stations, you can save, heal, or reshuffle your team. Returning to a station isn’t easy, though, as it burns “Purification Fuel,” a vital resource used for lighting paths and unlocking new floors. Every action has consequences. Linger to explore a few extra rooms, and you might run dry on fuel, facing a grim choice: ditch valuable loot or sacrifice a lagging teammate as bait.
Character system
METRO QUESTER offers 24 character classes, split into 8 main groups, each with 3 variants differing in skills, stats, and action speed. For example, the “Defender” group includes:
- Iron Wall: Frontline tank with taunt and counterattack skills.
- Guard Drone: Support-focused, boosting team armor.
- Spiked Bastion: Deals damage based on current armor.
Each class has 4 base skills and 2 advanced ones (unlocked via chips), plus combo abilities when paired with certain classes. For instance, teaming a “Medic Specialist” with a “Field Engineer” can trigger “Surgical Strike,” a heavy-damage attack that heals your lowest-HP member.
What’s neat is the “Stress” and “Loyalty” stats, subtle but impactful. High Stress causes erratic actions (skipping turns, misbuffing), while low Loyalty might lead to ignored orders in a pinch. You can lower Stress with items or rest at stations, but push too hard, and a character might ditch the team mid-dungeon.
Combat mechanics
METRO QUESTER’s turn-based combat is anything but simple. Each turn, you juggle action points, character speed, positioning (front or back row), status effects (bleed, poison, stun), and enemy skills. A foe might hit with “Neuro Shock,” paralyzing your whole squad for a turn if no one’s got an electric-resistance chip.
Some enemies play dead, literally, lingering after hitting 0 HP but unable to act. Fail to “finish” them with a special skill, and they revive after two turns with double HP. Another, the “Scourged Child,” explodes on death. If you don’t push it back or suppress it, your team’s toast.
Watch your resources in METRO QUESTER
METRO QUESTER has three key resources:
- Purification Fuel: Used for movement, unlocking floors, lighting, and cleansing infected zones.
- Food Rations: Run out, and characters lose HP, action points, and eventually pass out.
- Recovery Kits & Med Supplies: Heal and clear debuffs, but they’re super rare.
Once, I found a room with three treasure chests but had to cross a gauntlet of traps and fight a “Decaying Behemoth,” a hidden boss that drained my team’s HP. I won, losing two key members. The chests? A skill chip I couldn’t use and a gun for the wrong class. Back at the station, I realized I had no fuel to return. This game taught me a silent lesson.
Upgrade system
METRO QUESTER skips traditional leveling. You upgrade characters with Skill Chips, found from bosses or deep floors. Each chip ties to a specific skill or stat, but a character can only equip five, and removing a chip destroys it forever. Do you boost healing or damage? Speed or status resistance? No perfect character exists, only balanced teams.
You can also craft chips at stations using “Data Fragments,” rare rewards for clearing dungeons. Crafting’s random and costly, though. I’ve burned 40 fragments for a poison-resistance chip I didn’t need while facing emotionless robot swarms.
Graphics and sound
Pixel art is no limitation in METRO QUESTER. Each dungeon feels unique, from abandoned stations with cracked tiles to labs with eerie bio-tanks. Flickering lights, details like graffiti, human bones, and robotic bugs amplify the creep factor.
Sound is the scariest part. No clear background music, just rusted machinery, echoing footsteps, and occasional whispers, like someone’s still alive down here. In quiet moments, you hear characters panting or trembling, reflecting their Stress. It’s a subtle design with a big emotional punch.

METRO QUESTER is a challenge. It demands memory, calculation, sacrifice, and patience. It’s not flashy or forgiving, but it’s honest in how it treats you: survive, and you move on; screw up, and you pay. Each dungeon floor tests your tactics and grit, not just for your characters but for you. If you’ve ever loved optimizing a team, regretted a fatal misstep, or cheered at barely beating a boss with 1 HP, METRO QUESTER is your new home. A cold, dark home underground, but one that doesn’t lie.
