Threema is a Swiss-based messaging app that does one thing right: keep your conversations private to you and the person you’re talking to, and that’s it. No tracking, no ads, no malware hidden in cat stickers. The cool thing is that everything about Threema, from how you create an account to when you send a photo, video call, or whatever, is designed around privacy.
Introduce about Threema
Have you ever wondered what app you should use if you need a place to text securely, without fear of being tracked, without anyone knowing who you are? At that time, most people will immediately think of familiar names like Signal, Telegram, or at most turn on privacy mode in Messenger. But if you need something truly private in nature, you should know Threema.
No phone number, no email, no identity
When you first open Threema, the app asks you for nothing. No phone number, no email, no real name. With a single tap, you’ll be given a Threema ID code like “ABCD1234”. Signal still requires a phone number. Telegram lets you use a username but still requires digital authentication. And Threema? No one knows who you are unless you share it.
Comprehensive end-to-end encryption
Threema encrypts more than just messages. All communication data is end-to-end encrypted such as images, videos, notes, voice calls, and even avatars and online statuses. That’s right, even the line “User is typing…” is not exempt from security.
Accordingly, Threema uses the NaCl encryption library, a modern, lightweight encryption library designed to be secure and fast. NaCl is highly appreciated by security experts for its simplicity, no frills, but extremely secure.
To be more specific, the system uses asymmetric cryptography between public and private keys, ensuring that only the recipient can open the content you send. It ensures that no third party can get information from your conversation.
Threema does not store any data on the server
Messages in Threema only exist temporarily on the server, with the sole purpose of being transferred from sender to recipient. Once a message is successfully sent, it is deleted immediately. No caching, no storage, no backups.
Still not convinced? Go to Settings > About > Privacy in the app, you will see this policy clearly noted. This is one of the core design principles of Threema, the server does not store anything, including metadata such as IP address, time of message, or contact list.
Flexible contacts
Threema doesn’t force you to sync your contacts. You can turn off synchronization completely and just add people manually by entering your Threema ID or scanning a QR code. If you turn on synchronization, Threema will hash your contacts and compare them with encrypted data on the server without storing their real names or sending the original numbers. If you want to be sure who you’re chatting with, you can scan a QR code to authenticate your identity using a trust level: red (unverified), yellow (matched contacts), green (QR verified).
The good thing here is that you get to choose how you communicate. You can chat with strangers without revealing any information. Or you can authenticate your family members if you need extra security. It all depends on your needs.
Source code transparency
Many apps claim to be secure, but Threema chooses to let you see for yourself. In 2020, Threema officially opened sourced the entire client-side of its Android, iOS, and web apps. You can go to GitHub to see for yourself how the app works, how each line of code is written, and how encryption measures are implemented.
Threema publishes the entire code running on your device, allowing security researchers, developers, and even independent organizations to audit the app’s security, transparency, and consistency.

If you’re anti-social, allergic to personalized ads, or just want to talk without a company listening in, Threema is for you. And in a world where privacy is becoming a luxury, an app like Threema is worth keeping.
